Root Canals and Other Endodontic Procedures

Root canals are one of dentistry’s most infamous procedures.

While you might be intimidated to get a root canal or related procedure, our team at Jasper Endodontics strives to put you at ease.

Our goal of endodontic treatment is to maintain your natural smile and alleviate your dental pain.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a necessary procedure when the soft tissue inside the root canal becomes inflamed or infected.

  • Traumatic dental injury

Symptoms that indicate you may need a root canal:

  • Pain with pressure or chewing
  • A bump forming on the gums
  • Swelling in the gums and jaw
  • A cracked or broken tooth

Endodontic Retreatment

Some teeth that have had root canal treatment may heal improperly and result in pain or infection months or years after initial treatment. Retreatment provides an opportunity to clean out the old root filling materials and search for any undetected anatomy that may have been overlooked during previous treatment.

Reasons you may need a retreatment:

  • Complicated root anatomy that was overlooked during the initial root canal treatment
  • Delayed placement of final filling or crown after initial root canal treatment
  • The final restoration did not prevent saliva contamination to the inside of the tooth
  • The tooth develops a crack or new decay allowing for salivary contamination inside the tooth

Root End Surgery

Endodontic microsurgery is an option for root canal treatments or retreatments that are not healing properly. This procedure allows for access to the damaged root or bone so that it can be cleaned out manually. Typically, the end of the root is removed with the goal of removing bacteria living outside of the root or complex anatomy that may be housing bacteria. A small filling will be placed in the end of the root and the area is closed with sutures. Post-operative pain is generally mild to moderate and patients are back to normal activities the next day.

Reasons you may need this procedure:

  • Periapical cysts
  • Persistent infections
  • Complex restoration
  • Complex apical anatomy
